When RQ Drums started, its founder was giving personalized, one-on-one drum lessons with students wanting to learn rock and jazz drumming. Since then, the founder has grown to offer group lessons (teaching all instruments), written and published a book, and gathered a social media following thanks to polished drum instruction videos.
I was approached to create a logo for RQ Drums, but beyond a knowing "make it look cool," I had free creative rein. The goal for me was to create something modern, strong (like the drums!), and approachable. It was important for the design to not take itself too seriously, since that fit in completely with the character of the brand.
The Shunje cofounder presented his concept as a way for users to access individual news articles, without having to subscribe per-newspaper. He'd chosen the name based off of the Chinese word for 'library,' shu ge.This was also a way to honor the first press agency who worked with him - a Chinese company.
The client wished to use the Chinese symbol shu as a starting point. He wanted the logo to be simple, and to inspire trust and confidence. I wanted to develop a strong yet simplified version of the symbol, and the figure that became apparent in flipping the shu sign was a fortuitious bonus as it becomes a way to connect with the audience.
For this concept project, my mentor acted as the client Pink Flamingo, a small chain of unique pizza restaurants in Paris, France. The restaurants are eco-friendly and have a lot of character - decor is a lot of rock'n'roll diner, the pizzas are named after real and mythical personalities (Ghandi or Aphrodite, for example).
The brief was to redo the logo, creating something fun and classy, elegant while not taking itself too seriously - similar to a pink flamingo itself!
